Environmental Impacts
Cyclone Tracy caused a lot of impacts towards the environment. The impacts of Cyclone Tracy were absolutely catastrophic. The water supplies were ruined, the water was contaminated., sewerage lines were damaged and this resulted to a lack of sanitation and poisons which leaked into the environment. Metal, glass, debris and rubbish were thrown all over the city of Darwin. Trees were uprooted and turned over, major animal habitats were destroyed, major loss of the bird population. The food chain was broken, as after any natural disaster. The beaches were strewn with marine life, litter was in the oceans destroying coral reefs, fish and other animals. The environmental impacts of Cyclone Tracy left absolutely nothing standing in Darwin.
Social and Economic Impacts
Cyclone Tracy caused a lot of destruction towards the people and their property. Cyclone Tracy affected thousands of families across the city and many more who felt for them. Tracy killed 71 people, 49 of those on land and 22 out at sea. Tracy caused massive substantial destruction across Darwin. At Darwin Airport, 31 aircrafts were completely destroyed and torn apart and 25 were badly damaged. 41,000 out of the 47,000 inhabitants were left homeless. 30,000 of those were forced to evacuate the city. Severe health problems grew due to the damaged sewerage systems. Cyclone Tracy completely tore apart the city of Darwin and thousands evacuated what was once their home. Tracy caused a total damage of $837 million (1974 AUD) and compared to 2014's currency, an approximate $4.45 billion AUD.
